PDMs and the National School Sport Strategy

The Sport Relief weekend kicks off in schools on Friday 14th March 2008. A fundraising activity in your school can make a huge contribution to the wider work of schools and School Sport Partnerships. The activities particularly lend themselves to the following areas:

Leadership

Young leaders will be a fantastic source of great ideas when choosing your Sport Relief challenge. They can organise fundraising activities which will be appropriate and relevant to their own school. Young leaders could be used to:

  • generate fundraising ideas
  • lead fundraising activities at break, lunch and after school
  • work with particular year or tutor groups
  • work with local primary schools
  • run a TOPlink type festival to raise money
  • run fundraising activities in local clubs.

Competition

With many areas having Competition Managers, the week running up to the Sport Relief weekend itself could be devoted to competitions around the Mile or sporty challenges. Every competition during this week could raise money using some of the following ideas:

  • Getting sponsored per goal scored
  • Paying to train during the week running up to Sport Relief weekend
  • Running inter-form, inter-house, inter year competitions with teams of students challenging each other for Sport Relief.
  • Forms could compete against each other using pedometers to see who travels the most miles
  • Staff could challenge their class to play their favourite sport…what about pay to play at the local golf course?

Out of school hours learning (OSHL)

During the week of Sport Relief all OSHL clubs could have MILE or challenge themes:

  • Children try to walk as many miles as they can during the week
  • Extra sessions with a donation that goes to Sport Relief
  • Schools linking with Dreams and Teams could link with their partner schools and raise money.

Multi-skill

Any school running a Multi-Skill club or Academy could run a multi-skill festival to raise money for Sport Relief. Children could pay to train and or pay to take part in the festival.

Inclusion

Why not use the Sportsability resources, especially the Sportsability festival pack. All the activities would help to make a great Sport Relief festival. Why not invite some leaders form the local secondary school to help?

Pull your socks up!

Whatever you do whilst raising money for Sport Relief, make sure you’re wearing the Sport Relief Socks. Pay a small deposit and send us the rest of the money later. That way your students will look the part when they take on their challenge in school. Download your order form here. Each pair costs £2 with at least a £1 going to Comic Relief.
