Caring for the person you love is never a burden.
But it can be a full time job and, when it’s just the two of you, it can sometimes be a very lonely one too.
Sheila’s husband James was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s ten years ago but his health got far worse in the last three years of his life.
He was unable to dress himself and didn’t always know who or where he was. He needed care 24 hours a day.
Thankfully Sheila didn’t have to do it alone. She received vital practical and emotional support from a very special project.
“Just having someone to talk to makes an enormous difference,” she says.
“Knowing that someone is there for you and understands what you’re going through can help get you through the tough times.”
“James died on the day of our 53rd wedding anniversary” says Sheila.
“One of the last coherent things he said to me was ‘You are the best friend I have ever had.’”
Watching the person you’ve loved your whole life slowly turn into a stranger is a heartbreaking experience.
Your money is helping people like Sheila to cope when their loved one’s health starts to deteriorate rapidly and their flickers of memory and recognition become fewer and farther between.
